Thanksgiving Weekend Review

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving weekend. Thanksgiving was off to a promising start to the extended weekend after a great Turkey Ball session (new tradition of playing basketball Thursday morning instead of football). Thanksgiving is always a great day with good food, family, football and college basketball on. This is the start of a long blog as there is plenty to write about from this weekend.

Waking up on Black Friday, I put my black Jermaine Johnson III jersey on and hopeful that Tim Boyle can recreate the Mike White game from a year ago. Getting to MetLife two hours early was the perfect amount of time to enjoy a good old fashioned New Jersey tailgate. The notification of Lazard being inactive sent a jolt of life through the parking lot. Hearing rumors in the parking lot of Braxton Berrios telling the Earle’s that they made him sit out last week to be fully healthy to play his former team and get him a touchdown was all I needed to bet Braxton to score against the Jets. Similar to the Devito family, my Dad and I got to have a good time in the Meadowlands parking lot before filing into the Stadium.

All the fun was stopped there as the Jets offense struggled to do anything the entire first quarter. The Jets got a big stop on their own 4 yard line just to go three and out again and get the Dolphins great field position and went down 3-0. Another Jets punt deep into their own territory and the Dolphins continued to move the ball easily down the field against the number one defense in the league. When Tyreek Hill said that Tua is the most accurate Quarterback in the league, he was not lying. Tua was dropping the ball perfectly to both Hill and Waddle with defenders draped all over them. With 1 minute left in the first half, down 10-0, the Jets still have not gotten the ball past half field and punted to the Phins. On the next play, Tua threw a lollipop right to Brandin Echols who took it to the crib to bring the Jets within 4. One guy sitting directly behind us did his best Romo impression and said after the punt “the Jets defense has a better chance to score than the offense.” Of course Zurlein missed the extra point but to get completely dominated and go into the half down 4 was a great feeling. Until Mike McDaniels decided to get cute and try to get a few more points. With 9 seconds left, DJ Reed jumped Tuas pass and picked him off for the second time in a minute. MetLife was rocking and the Jets had to take advantage of the turnover and went for the Hail Mary. As the pass was thrown, the unthinkable happened, Javon Holland ran past the entire Jets offense giving a half-hearted effort trying to tackle him and scored a touchdown. 17-6 at half. I was in absolute shock and disbelief as Holland robbed any hope that the Jets had.

The rest of the game was pretty uneventful as the players must’ve had the same feeling the fans had when the Hail Mary was returned for 6 and Braxton Berrios did not score a touchdown. As a Jets fan, I cannot stand the incompetence and negativity that our beat writers have (Rich Cimini) so I will try my best to not sound like them. What this game shows is that it was never a Zach Wilson problem. Nate Hackett could be the worst play-caller in all of football and having a QB that knows his scheme did not change anything. With the reports of Rodgers coming back, I pray that he can find it in himself to realize that playing behind a decimated offense line with minimal play makers is a bad idea for a 40 year old coming off a torn achilles. The Jets play the Falcons next week at home and they have a legitimate shot to beat the NFC South’s first place team.

Coming back after the long-drive home from East Rutherford, I was so excited to watch the Knicks play their first ever in-season tournament game at the Garden. By the time I was settled in, the Knicks were getting outscored 17-0 in the third quarter. This Miami Heat team is not for casuals. Besides Bam and Jimmy most people would not be able to name the guys the Heat rolled out on Friday. However, Jaime Jaquez Jr has been super impressive so far in his rookie year and was getting buckets against the Knicks. The young Knicks bench kept them in the game highlighted by Immanuel Quickley and Isaiah Hartenstein. IQ and Ihart were +20 in the second half and the second they came in for the Knicks, the Heat lead started to diminish. Between buckets from IQ and Barrett, the Knicks were able to cut the lead to 7 and then Jalen Brunson took the entire game over. Brunson was cooking Josh Richardson, who was all over him and scored 8 points in the final 3 minutes. Brunson, Barrett and IQ all hit the same amount of shots as the entire Heat roster in the 4th (3). Barrett also locked up Jimmy Butler and the Knicks had one of their biggest second half comebacks in franchise history to stay alive in the in-season tournament. Unfortunately, they could not build off this win as Devin Booker ruined another insane Brunson performance hitting a go ahead three over Barrett and Randle with 1 second left yesterday. Even without KD, the Suns beat the Knicks at their own game and the hustle of Jordan Goodwin helped win the Suns that game.

Not sure what happened on Saturday, was there college football on? Another brutal loss for my Buckeyes up north and I thought for the first time in three years, the better team won the game. The Iron Bowl was absolutely electric and that Jalen Milroe touchdown on 4th and 30 will go down in the record books. Take all of my teams losing this week and parlay it with every single player on the opposing fantasy team I played this week scoring a touchdown (I just need Ty Chandler to outscore Justin Fields tonight to win) and it was a pretty rough weekend but thankful I got to spend it with my friends and family.
